The average person who is facing a standard bankruptcy situation does have a number of options from which to choose.
Usually, there are three distinct choices that people can make to help them resolve significant financial problems:
1) they can find a qualified attorney who will provide legal advice and help them through the filing process;
2) they have the option to handle the filing “pro se” (i.e., ‘self-help’ or ‘do-it-yourself’) and in turn may save thousands of dollars in legal fees — if they have the ability to manage the process on their own; or
3) they can stay out of the bankruptcy court all together and review information about other financial and credit options that might be available to them.
Of course a person could do absolutely nothing at all, but in doing so creditors could force a person into bankruptcy. It is far better for a person to proactively manage his or her situation directly.
